(2) BEER BURGLARS 13
(6) I’D HIT THAT 7
HYDE PARK — The Beer Burglars fell into an early 5-0 hole before coming back and trouncing sixth-seeded I’d Hit That, 13-7, At Connell #1.
(2) BEER BURGLARS 12
(5) DO IT 8
HYDE PARK — In a tense playoff match-up between two bitter postseason rivals, the Beer Burglars broke open an 8-8 tie with four runs in the sixth inning to beat Do It, 12-8, and advance to the finals of the losers’ bracket in the BWCS double-elimination playoffs.
In doing so, the Burglars (14-2) earned a measure of revenge against the team that beat them twice to win the 2008 title (when the Burglars were known as Thunderlips).
After spotting fifth-seeded Do It four runs in the top of the first, the Burglars’ bats answered with six in the bottom.
For the next five innings, as the teams traded zeroes and ones on the scoreboard, the Burglars’ lead never exceeded two runs. Do It (12-5) tied the game briefly with a run in the top half of the sixth inning.
But their backs were broken in the bottom of the inning on a huge two-out, two-run triple by Justin Drechsler that stretched the Burglars’ lead to 11-8. It appeared Do It’s left fielder may have royally fucked up on the play; replays were non-existent.
In the losers’ bracket final, the Burglars will play another familiar foe: the Whammies, who sent the Burglars to the losers’ bracket last week with a 12-9 win. Playing in the winners’ bracket final, the Whammies (10-5) gave #1 overall seed — and joke — Nice Peepers all they could handle, bowing out 15-14 with the tying run on third base.
The winner of the Burglars/Whammies game will have the unenviable task of beating Nice Peepers (14-1) twice to win the championship. While the Whammies have lost twice to Peepers — both times by one run — the Burglars were positively obliterated by Peepers, 16-1, in their second game of the season.
Odds of winning championship: Losers’ bracket finals:
Nice Peepers 2 : 25 Whammies (-180)
Whammies 20 : 1 Over/under: 25
Beer Burglars 100 : 1
